Can exercise boost your immune system?
It’s an excellent question, particularly right now as we fight the COVID-19 pandemic, a strong immune system is more important than ever. Here’s the thing, the immune system is exactly that, it’s a system, not a single entity. It requires balance and harmony to function well. There is a lot that researchers still don't know about the intricacies of the immune response. At present, there are no scientifically proven direct links between lifestyle and enhanced immune function. However that doesn’t mean that a healthy lifestyle won’t give you the upper hand in strengthening your immune system. This includes: A good diet that includes plenty of fruit and veg, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, drinking alcohol only in moderation, not smoking, minimising stress and getting a good amount of sleep.
We know that exercise improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, helps control body weight, and protects against a variety of diseases. We also know that just like a healthy diet, exercise can contribute to good health in general and therefore to a healthy immune system. More directly by promoting good circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move through the body freely and do their job efficiently.
So get moving, exercise 2 - 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes and in-between your exercise days keeping moving in general, eat a healthy and balanced diet and give your immune system that extra helping hand!
